Silver Sprung?
Monday, October 9th, 2006
It’s been over 4 years since I last saw Silver Spring. I spent quite a bit of time there in 1995 and 1996 when I attended Blair High School… We used to waste time at Cityplace after school.
I had heard so much about the development, but hadn’t seen it first hand until yesterday. I met my folks after church and we had lunch at Macaroni Grill. Between the parking garage and the restaurant we passed a Chipotle, a Cold Stone Creamery, a Noodles Inc, a Potbelly Sandwich Works, and several other places I might rather have eaten if I knew they were there (but the Sausage Cannolini at Macaroni Grill is the bomb, so it worked out.)
I guess I am impressed, although it’s so new and pristine it really takes away from the look and feel you used to get walking down Fenton Street. You could pick the whole complex up and plop it down in Owings Mills or Columbia and it would look exactly the same… I guess that’s progess though.
One thing I found particularly silly was the astroturf park, which is literally a half-block large putting green with no holes, but plenty of cigarette butts and trash. They need a vaccum zamboni to keep it looking nice. There were people and kids all over it, laying down, playing frisbee, etc. It just goes to show you how happy people can be on fake grass.
